Design Advice - Accessories: the missing piece

Accessorizing 1.2.3
  • Start fresh! Remove all existing accessories and separate them into piles according to type, shape and size
  • Group related items together: group by color, shape, design, or purposes when sorting items.
  • Keep in mind that odd numbers of pieces work better than even numbers.
  • Keep it simple. Less is more.
  • Alternate textures to create interest.
  • Apply the Triangle Theory: alternate heights and zigzag pieces front to back to create visual interest and depth instead of placing them in a straight line. The tallest piece should be placed nearer the back.
Accessory do’s & don’ts:
  • DO balance both sides of a display with similarly proportioned pieces.
  • DON’T use all one material, such as glass, unless you are going to display an entire collection.
  • DO use mirrors to create an illusion of space.
  • DON’T hang a mirror without making certain it reflects something interesting/appealing.
  • DO use an odd number of items.
  • DON’T create visual clutter with too many pieces.
