History & Background
Slumberland first opened as a mattress specialty shop in 1967. Since then, we have expanded our product mix and grown to 127 stores in 12 states, with store size ranging from 12,000 to 45,000 square feet. All stores are located in premium retail locations with exceptional visibility and strong demographic retail profiles. Slumberland stores are professionally decorated, featuring spot lighting and dramatic color and design treatment. Slumberland is a privately held company with 27 years of franchising experience. Our franchising strategy is unique, and a significant part of our growth strategy; we are the only full line / name brand furniture store in the United States that franchises. Our 127 stores include both company owned and franchise stores.
The Slumberland approach is best defined by our brand position: we won't sell style without value and we won't sell value without style. Our commitment to providing furniture that "lives the way you do" allows us to focus on furnishing the rooms in the home where comfort and style are valued equally: the family/living room/den, casual dining/kitchen area and the master bedroom. We take pride in our strong partnerships with some of America's most trusted furniture brands: La-Z-Boy, Sealy, Simmons, Natuzzi leather and more. Furnishing the rooms where people really live means we concentrate on mattresses, upholstered (leather & fabric) sofas, reclining sofas, sleep sofas, master bedroom furniture, reclining chairs, casual dining, home office and home entertainment.
Although the Slumberland family of stores is a regional, not national, chain, our volume is significant to some of the nation's largest manufacturers. In fact, we're proud to be America's largest seller of La-Z-Boy products, and the Midwest's largest seller of Sealy and Simmons mattresses. No other regional furniture retailer has achieved our level of market penetration. For the franchise owner, there's great advantage to merchandising as part of the Slumberland program: our merchandise niche is clearly defined; our priority is on fast-turning product; the thrust of our merchandise plan is at middle and middle-high price points, the high volume segment of furniture business in the United States. We distribute furniture to our stores through three regional distribution centers (St. Paul-MN, Baraboo-WI, & Beresford-SD), which allows us to ship complete truckloads with a mix of different merchandise. Trucks are scheduled to meet our stores' merchandise needs so the stores do not need to maintain large inventory levels.

Slumberland Furniture's marketing philosophy combines convenient, high profile locations with name brand merchandise, high impact advertising, and a value-added approach to the customer.
Advertising is a key component of our marketing strategy. Slumberland is a dominant advertiser and we strive to be #1 in top-of-mind-awareness for home furnishings.
Another important element of our marketing philosophy is the value-added approach. We were one the first retailers to offer an extended comfort guarantee on mattresses, one part of our Mattress Plus program which includes:
