1. Style

First, consider if you want a reclining or stationary sofa. Also, how will you be using it? Consider how many guests you will need to seat. Chaise lounges are a great way to increase seating.

Then decide which style you prefer when finding your perfect sofa. Do you want it to match your existing decor or stand out?

Here are some common styles:

1. Mid-Century Modern: Clean lines and organic curves. If you prefer minimalist and eclectic looks, this style is for you.
2. Traditional Style: If you like comfort, warmth, and familiarity, traditional is your style.

2. Color

Color choice is as important as style and material. You can make the furniture a statement piece in your room with a bright white, green, blue, or red. Or you can take a subdued approach with a more common color like gray, brown, or black. It is safer to spice up your living space with a colorful accent pillow.

3. Material

Next, consider your lifestyle. Do you need a super durable material that can withstand the attacks of kids and pets? If so, a leather or fabric sofa will be your best bet. Or is comfort the most important factor? Nothing beats fabric or microfiber.

4. Available Space

Lastly, measure the length and width of your living room. You don’t want a massive sectional in a small apartment.

If you have limited room, consider the traffic flow in and around your living room. Leave at least 18 inches of space around the sofa for traffic flow.

A good rule of thumb: your sofa should be no longer than two-thirds of your wall space and not block doorways or windows.

Sofa size is important. You don't want your living area feeling cramped. Generally, your sofa should never be more than two-thirds of your room so that you have space to walk around. Consider a loveseat or a sleeper sofa if you have a small space.

Also, measure doorways and hallways. Ensure you can move the furniture during delivery.
