When it comes to design, there are countless rooms out there in desperate need of help. With a little tweaking, we will unlock it’s true potential and beauty. It’s been there all along. We just need to find it. It’s all about the arrangement.
Notice how the furniture is primarily arranged against the walls at the beginning of the video. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this decorating technique, this room, in particular, is very large and has a lot of open space that is wasted with this decorating style. The first thing we do is move the furniture to the center of the room to make better use of the room’s space and create a more intimate environment.
Seating
The focus of this living room is going to be seating. This means the introduction of the sofa in the middle of the room and adding the red accent chair around it. This arrangement is intended to create visual harmony with the position of each chair in relation to the other, and it is also supposed to create intimacy within the room. Unlike the previous arrangement, people seated in this configuration of the room will be close enough to speak to each other comfortably. It is essential to optimize the design of seats in a living room to help facilitate guests speaking to one another and easy conversation. Nothing is worse than a room that stifles attempts at talking within it. For this reason, we are spacing the seats close to the sofa but not too close so as to feel obtrusive.
Color
The careful selection of color choices is essential for creating visual harmony in a space. The walls in this room are a neutral light blue, so we want to build on that. We do this by introducing the neutral-toned sofa to the room, which goes well with the natural room color. We then add the red accent chairs for some visual diversity. The sharp red of the accent chairs contrasts strongly with the rest of the colors in the room, creating a focal point for the space. We also add the yellow chairs next to the dresser. This creates dissonance in the color scheme, with the dark wood tone of the dresser strongly contrasting with the bright yellow of the chairs. This combination helps make the whole space a bit more interesting, and the difference in textures between the wooden dresser and the chairs helps create depth in the room.

Should All the Colors I Use Match?
A fair question, but one with a clear answer. No, all your colors do not have to match. In fact, too much matching in your furniture can create an unintentionally monochromatic look to your home that you definitely don’t want. Additionally, having just one or two pieces of furniture that match against a neutral background can look best in many cases. In any case, don’t feel compelled at all to have all your furniture match.
What is the Purpose of Texture?
The purpose of texture when decorating a room is to add dimensionality or depth to the space. What this means is that a finer level of detail is visible than would ordinarily be visible with this form of decoration. Wood tones are often used for texture, as their inconsistent coloring allows for more depth and detail to be drawn into the room as a whole. The addition of texture to a space can serve to enable the addition of finer details in that space, giving you further decorating opportunities to take hold of. Use texture as sparingly or as much as you want, as it is very hard to go overboard with texture in a room.
How Does Lighting Make a Difference in Decorating?
Lighting makes a big difference in that it can help determine the tone of a room when you enter it. Warm light, for example, can make a room feel welcoming and inviting. Whereas cold light can make a space seem alien and clinical. Both have their places in the decorator’s repertoire, as both can be used to create the desired effect of a room. Lighting also highlights specific colors and tones, allowing its users to elevate the appearance of certain pieces of furniture. Be sure to consider lighting as a critical element in your decorating scheme.
