Area rugs are versatile design tools that anchor the space, act as a design element, or help define different spaces in the room. Switching out your area rugs is also a quick and easy way to change to give your room’s décor a refresh. You can easily change your style from modern to traditional, contemporary to classic. Choosing an area rug for your home involves several factors.
TYPES OF AREA RUGS
Your personal style is unique and ever-changing, just like you. You want items in your home that reflect your taste, your personality. Your home should be identifiably yours. An area rug can help you elegantly define this you-ness. Low pile rugs are durable and easy to clean, while high-pile rugs stand as a cozy statement piece in your home. An area rug can be a quick-fix to an excessively cold floor, and your feet will thank you every chilly morning.
Defining a room is as simple as picking out one of our throw rugs. From eye-popping patterns to monotone hues, these small details are the stuff of which decorating statements. Dreamy driftwood prints and warm rustic tones, digital art deco patterns, and watercolor lines: our throw rug gallery has something for everyone.
AREA RUG STYLES
There are as many area rugs styles as there are furniture, lamps, and other accessories. These days your choices range beyond the traditional European or Persian to include simple sisals, bold contemporary florals, and strong mid-century modern geometrics. Before choosing a style for your area rug, think about what type of vibe you want the room to have. And keep in mind that the rug doesn’t have to match every color in the room but should work with the tones and textures of the furnishings. At Slumberland, you’ll find an array of colors, patterns, sizes, and piles to choose from at great prices you'll love.
Color– Color sets the tone for the space and can change the entire vibe in a room. A neutral color can balance a room with a lot of color and texture.
Patterns– If you’re room has mainly solid colors, the pattern can pull a room together. And if you already have a lot of patterns, a solid rug can ground the space. It’s all about creating balance.
Area Rug Sizes– Choosing the wrong size area rug is a common mistake. There should be approximately 10-20 inches of floor showing between the wall and the edges of the area rug, depending on the size of the room. Center the rug in the room with an equal distance between the wall and the rug on all sides.
High Pile vs. Low Pile– Thisis partly a practical choice and partly a style choice. Low-pile rugs are sturdier and easier to vacuum, while high piles are more luxurious and make rooms look more inviting and cozy. A low-pile rug generally works better in areas with more foot traffic, while a high-pile rug will last longer in a room with little foot traffic.
Area rugs can also define spaces in an open floor plan or layered to highlight a specific area. The rules in these instances are a little different — it’s okay to go too big rather than too small.
CHOOSING AN AREA RUG MATERIAL
There are two types of rug materials: natural or synthetic, but there are some different materials within those categories. Rugs made of natural fibers such as cotton, wool, or sisal tend to wear better, while synthetic fibers resist stains and fading.
Wool Rugs –Soft and durable, wool rugs are an ideal choice for high-traffic areas.
Polypropylene Rugs– Stain and fade resistant, these rugs are soft and lightweight.
Cotton Rugs– Perfect for a casual look, cotton is often used to make braided or flatweave rugs.
Sisal Rugs– this natural fiber offers rich textures and organic beauty to any room.
