Mattress Features Explained

Understanding the features that affect comfort, support, and sleep quality

Shopping for a mattress shouldn't require learning an entirely new language.

That's why every mattress at Slumberland includes easy-to-understand ratings and feature icons that help you quickly compare comfort, support, cooling, pressure relief, and more.

This guide explains what those ratings mean and how they can help you find the right mattress for your sleep style.

In this guide:

Back Support vs. Feel

One of the things that makes mattress shopping confusing is that support and comfort are often treated as the same thing. They aren't.

That's why every mattress at Slumberland includes separate ratings for Back Support and Feel. Understanding the difference can help you find a mattress that is both comfortable and supportive.

What is Back Support?

Back Support measures how well a mattress helps support your body and relieve pressure while you sleep. It takes into account factors such as mattress construction, coil systems, foam layers, edge support, and other materials that contribute to overall support.

Strong back support can be especially important for people with back, hip, or spine concerns, those who spend long hours on their feet, or anyone looking for additional support while they sleep.

  • 1–2: Mild support
  • 3: Moderate support
  • 4–5: Strong to maximum support

In general, higher Back Support ratings provide stronger overall support and pressure relief.

What is Feel?

Feel describes how soft or firm a mattress feels when you first lie down. Think of it as the comfort experience created by the upper layers of the mattress.

Some sleepers prefer a firmer sleeping surface, while others enjoy a softer, more cushioned feel. Neither option is inherently better—it comes down to personal preference.

  • 1: Firmest feel
  • 3: Medium feel
  • 5: Softest feel
A common misconception: A firm mattress does not automatically provide better support. Because Feel and Back Support are measured separately, a mattress can have a soft feel while still providing excellent support.

Not sure where to start? Mattress feel describes how soft or firm a mattress feels when you first lie down.
Explore firm, medium, and soft feel mattresses to find the comfort level that's right for your sleep style.
Remember, feel and support are different—many mattresses offer strong support regardless of whether they feel firm or soft.

Mattress Types Explained

Most mattresses fall into one of three main types: innerspring, memory foam, or hybrid. Each type supports your body in a different way, so understanding the difference can help you narrow your choices.

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses use coils for support and have a more traditional, responsive feel. They are a good option for sleepers who like a mattress with more bounce or push-back.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses use layers of foam that contour to your body and help relieve pressure. They can be a good fit for sleepers who like a more cradling feel.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine coil support with foam comfort layers. They offer a balance of support, pressure relief, and responsiveness.

Helpful shopping tip: If you are not sure which type feels best, try each style in store or compare options online by mattress type.

Features That Improve Sleep Comfort

Beyond support and mattress type, many mattresses include additional features designed to improve comfort and help address common sleep concerns. Understanding these features can help you focus on the options that matter most to you.

Pressure Relief

Every mattress provides some level of pressure relief, but some use advanced materials specifically designed to reduce pressure points. Pressure-relieving mattresses can be especially helpful for side sleepers and those who experience discomfort in their hips, shoulders, or lower back.

Look for mattresses with Moderate or Advanced Pressure Relief ratings when pressure-point comfort is a priority.

Cooling Features

Sleeping hot is one of the most common sleep complaints. Cooling mattresses use specialized materials and technologies designed to help regulate temperature and create a cooler sleep environment throughout the night.

Some products offer basic cooling benefits, while others include advanced cooling materials for sleepers who tend to overheat.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation helps reduce how much movement transfers across the mattress. This can be especially valuable for couples, helping minimize disruptions when one person changes position or gets out of bed during the night.

Adjustable Base Compatibility

Adjustable bases allow you to raise your head, feet, or both for personalized comfort. Many modern mattresses are adjustable-base compatible, making it easier to read, watch TV, reduce snoring, or simply find a more comfortable sleeping position.

Helpful shopping tip: The best mattress for you may combine several features. For example, a hybrid mattress can provide strong support, advanced pressure relief, cooling technology, and adjustable-base compatibility all in one mattress.

Specialty Mattress Features

Some mattress features may not be the first thing shoppers look for, but they can still make a meaningful difference depending on your lifestyle, home, and personal preferences.

Ships in a Box

Boxed mattresses are compressed, rolled, and packaged into a compact box for easier transportation. They can be a convenient option for apartments, tight stairways, guest rooms, and anyone who prefers a simpler delivery experience.

Once unboxed, these mattresses expand to their full size and are ready for use after the recommended setup period.

Antimicrobial Features

Some mattresses include antimicrobial treatments in the cover or materials. These treatments are designed to help inhibit the growth of certain microbes and can contribute to a cleaner sleep environment.

While antimicrobial properties are not a substitute for regular mattress care and protection, they can be a valuable additional feature for some households.

Remember: No single feature determines whether a mattress is right for you. Focus first on support, comfort, and mattress type, then consider specialty features that match your lifestyle and preferences.
